Leather origin

Where does our leather come from?

One thing has to be said in advance, though: We only use hides that are a by-product of meat production and we do not use any leather from endangered animal species.

The leathers we use come exclusively from renowned tanneries and mainly from Italy. There we do not buy from dealers, but directly from manufacturers with whom we have been working for many years. Apart from Italy, we also purchase a smaller proportion of leather from other countries, e.g. from Portugal or India. Here, too, these are mostly based on long-standing supplier relationships.

In our own plants, our leather inspectors inspect every single hide and mark it. Thanks to precise archiving, we can also subsequently trace the origin of the leather that is used for each individual shoe. Apart from this, our leathers are regularly tested, both physically and chemically, to verify the absence of harmful substances. We have a trust-based working relationship with our suppliers, reinforced by strict adherence to our code of conduct. In addition, the majority of tanneries in our supply chain are certified to the high standards of the Leather Working Group (LWG).

Certified according to LWG

We are a proud member of the Leather Working Group (LWG). Through our membership, we advocate for responsible leather manufacturing all over the world.

The LWG is an internationally recognised non-profit organisation with global operations and the mission to establish comprehensive environmental and social welfare standards for the whole leather supply chain. We encourage processes and standards that ensure the ethical, environmentally friendly, and high-quality manufacture of leather products. Tanneries and leather traders can be certified to LWG standards.

LWG membership provides us with greater transparency regarding the sustainability practices of our suppliers. Up to around 70% of the leather we use today already comes from LWG-certified tanneries. We plan to increase this proportion going forward.
